Trading is always a high risk and may not be suitable for everyone. Losses can exceed your investment. The author of this website is not a BitShares developer and not responsible for any damages or losses caused by software that is linked from here. BitShares is still in its early stage and digital assets based on blockchain technology like SmartCoins and BitAssets are experimental and there is no guarantee for success or stability.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is BitShares a Cryptocurrency?
Yes, but other than usual crypto coins BTS is not meant to be a currency itself but more a kind of shares in the decentralized platform. BTS is the fuel to drive the BitShares platform that hosts multiple tokens used as currency.
  • Can I mine BitShares?
No, BitShares is eliminating the Proof of Work (PoW) security in Bitcoin for Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) which is cheaper and more efficient. This enables BitShares to have near instant transactions with extremely low fees, and an infrastructure that scales to the size of Visa/PayPal and beyond.
  • What is the difference between BitShares and OpenLedger?
BitShares is the actual blockchain with its embedded Decentralized Exchange and order book. OpenLedger is a 3rd party doing business connected to the BitShares blockchain. They offer a web wallet openledger.io and a gateway service to provide an on- and offramp for various cryptocurrency's and so called FIAT money.
  • I cannot login but my accoutname and password is correct.
First, to make sure you always use the correct password I recommend to use a password manager like KeePass (link).
** If you have chosen the "Wallet model" during account creation you might need to restore your account from Backup Brainkey or .bin file.
** If you have chosen the "Account model" during account creation process you must remember your password because there is no way around to restore your account.
However, to avoid possible problems with the popular Web-Wallet's you can also use the Light Client (link).
See also the account recovery thread on bitsharestalk.org (link).
  • I'm trying to buy, sell or transfer and receive a cryptic error message.
Make sure you have enough BTS in your account to cover the network fees for your operation.
For some operations you also may be able to set the fee type to a different token that you own.
If you have no way to fund your account yourself some guy maybe able to send you 1 BTS, just ask in the community.
  • What about fees?
BitShares has an embedded and adjustable fee schedule for all kinds of operations. The BitShares Committee does revise the fee schedule regulary to adapt market conditions and keep the fees as low as possible. Fees are generally paid in BTS so make sure you always have some in your account. Although you can also pay some fees in different tokens but that does require a fee pool of the given asset to be filled with BTS in order to convert token -> BTS automatically.
    see https://wallet.bitshares.eu/explorer/fees
  • How to fund an asset fee pool?
Open up the issuer’s account, click the issued assets tab and open up the dialog to change/update the asset. There will be a fee pool tab that allows you to fund the fee pool and claim the accumulated fees!
  • Is there a testnet?
Yes you can use the fully operational testnet to create accounts, tokens and learning by doing (link).
